Why Slaviša Jokanović could've worked out at Sheffield United

Sheffield United sacked their manager Slaviša Jokanović after a poor start to the league, seeing the Blades sit at 16th in the league after 22 games, picking up just 23 points.

However, Slaviša Jokanović is known for his slow starts within the English game, during his managerial spells with both Watford and Fulham, who he eventually had success with come the end of his Championship seasons.

He took Watford to an automatic promotion place, coming second to Bournemouth that season, whilst with Fulham, he managed them to promotion via the Play-Offs, beating Aston Villa 1-0 at Wembley.

After his first ten games at each English side, he had a better record at Sheffield United than he did with Watford. At Sheffield United he won four, drew three and lost three. At Watford he also won four, however he drew two and lost four. His worst start of the three sides came at Fulham, where he won two, drew three and lost five in his first ten games in charge.

Slaviša ended up promoting both Watford and Fulham to the Premier League. However, he wasn’t given long enough at Bramall Lane with the board sacking him, and appointing the Blades under 23s manager, Paul Heckingbottom, who has so far enjoyed a good start in his new managerial role.

Sheffield United fan and content producer, Ben Humphries, the Travelling Blades said, “I don’t think I can really judge Slaviša, as we didn’t have him in long enough. I don’t think there were really grounds to sack him from where we were.”

The Sheffield United fans have been split following the disappointing start to life under Slaviša, but many came together after the press conference following his sacking. Ben went onto say, “He was promised things that he wasn’t given, and ended up having to panic loan players.”

“I think that if we got him in earlier, addressed signings, released some players, and brought in a whole load of new players and just implemented a clean slate, we may have been alright, but that wasn’t the case, it was just a mess of a wage structure.” Ben said.

Slaviša spent a total of 26 weeks at Sheffield United, before being sacked, whilst at Watford he spent, 34 weeks. Difference being Watford hired Slaviša Jokanović midway during the season. He kept the job at Fulham for 150 weeks, which is where he has spent the most time in his managerial career.

He managed 145 games with Fulham overall, winning 64, drawing 36 and losing 45. With Watford he managed 36, winning 21, drawing 5 and losing 10, whilst with Sheffield United he managed 22, winning 8, drawing 5 and losing 9.
