The drastic downfall of York City

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

Yorkshire is host to the lowest ranked professional football club in the world which is York City.

York play in the Vanerama National League north, which is the sixth tier of English football. They’ve played in this league since their relegation from the National League in the 2016/17 season, where they finished 21st, which is the fourth and final relegation place, on 50 points.

York currently sit 11th in the league with 23 points after 17 games, which as it stands leaves them as the lowest ranked professional football club in the world. The club has been in decline for a very long time, as they used to be a football league side.

A stat from Sky Sports posted by York City fanpage 'Y Front' reports that the Minstermen are also statistically the biggest underachieving side in England, being 42 places below their 50-year average.

Many York fans believe the downfall is due to poor ownership, and mismanagement over the recent years. Owner of the York City fan page Spirit of Eighty Four, Dean Wade said. “The reason for such a dramatic downfall I firmly believe lies solely at the door of club chairman Jason McGill.” The club has been in decline since 2015, and they fell from the football league in 2016, into the National League.

Dean then went onto say “Poor recruitment both on and off the field since 2015 is the fundamental reason York City now find themselves regularly outplayed and out-thought by other National League North teams who operate on far smaller budgets with part time playing staff”.

Step six of English football is made up of two divisions, in the National League North and South, where currently, 43 teams, are split up into two divisions, with the North hosting 22 and the South taking 21 of those, and with only four of those teams being professional, York City are the lowest of the four.

York may find themselves stuck down in the depths of the National League North for a while, as they missed the chance to be promoted during COVID. They were flying high at the top of the league, with the league title only a finger tip away, however the league got cancelled midway through the season, and the title was worked out through the points-per-game (PPG) system, which in the end promoted Kings Lynn Town, who finished the season on less points than York.

York then went onto to play in the play-offs, but unfortunately lost 2-0 in the semi-finals to Altrincham, who went onto to beat Boston United 1-0 in the final to gain promotion.
