Sheffield United's Zak Brunt "enjoying" loan spell at Southend

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

The promising Blades youngster is relishing playing regular first-team football for the National League club.

20-year-old Brunt says his experience at Southend so far has been "really important and necessary" for his development.

“Going out and getting regular first-team football was something I wanted,” Brunt told us.

“Just being able to test myself week in week out with such high demands on me such as the need to get three points and also the fans were what I wanted to experience."

Brunt believes in the importance of young players like himself having experiences out on loan.

“I think they are brilliant," said Brunt. “They give you a chance to go and prove yourself and also give you valuable experiences that you can take away for the rest of your career."

Brunt joined Southend on loan towards the end of October and has so far started 9 games for the south-east Essex club.

Shrimper’s manager Kevin Maher has been impressed by Brunt’s quality in different midfield roles.

"Zak has got great quality on the ball,” he told The Echo newspaper.

“He can play a number of different roles but the most important thing is where you get him on the ball."

The versatile midfielder is prepared to take whatever step necessary to get closer to fulfilling his ambition.

“Obviously I want to play for Sheffield United and that’s the goal," Brunt said. "so whatever is going to get me there and give me the best chance [is the next step]."

The loan agreement between the two clubs is set to expire in January. It is not clear whether Brunt’s spell at Southend will be extended for the rest of the season.
