Sheffield FC are moving back to Sheffield

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

Sheffield FC are planning a long awaited move back to Sheffield after playing in Dronfield for 21 years

The worlds oldest football club were formed in 1857, by Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest, as reported by the Sheffield FC website.

The Club as they’re nicknamed, used to play football at Bramall Lane, the oldest professional football stadium in the world, currently in use by Championship side, Sheffield United.

Sheffield FC currently play at the coach and horses in Dronfield, which is in Derbyshire, however the club are hopeful to make a return back to the city of Sheffield as they have plans for a newly built stadium in the city.

A club rich in history, and the founders of the game of football as we know it, should be playing in the city they were formed in. Just like their rivals Hallam FC, who play at the oldest stadium in the world, Sandygate road.

Sheffield FC chairman, Richard Tims said, “Since we moved to Dronfield in 2001 it was always our ambition to come back to Sheffield, we planned a move back to the city whilst England were bidding for the 2018 World Cup, but unfortunately this didn’t happen.”

Richard then went onto say that the club are hopeful to move into their new stadium within the next two or three years.

Their current ground holds 2089, with 250 of those being seats, however Sheffield FC have plans for a larger stadium, with a capacity of 4000, and 1000 of those being seated.

Sheffield currently sit at the bottom of the Northern Premier League Division One east on 14 points, being four points from complete safety of the relegation zone. The new stadium move shows the clubs ambitions as they look to aim higher up the football league pyramid.

“We do have ambitions to play higher.” Said Richard. With Sheffield moving into such a large stadium, and back into Sheffield it could really help bringing the fans into watch more non-league football.

The new ground will be called ‘Home of Football Stadium’ and it will be located at the Transport ground at Meadowhead in Sheffield.

A lot of excitement surrounding this proposed move, as the club have waited so long and patiently to move back into Sheffield. They last played in Sheffield in 2001, at their old ground, which was the Don Valley stadium, now known as Sheffields Olympic Legacy Park, following its demolition/rebuild between November 2013 and May 2014.

The side have moved stadiums 11 times in their 164-year history and are soon to make it 12. They’ve played at ten different stadiums in that time as well.
