Table topping Rotherham United are currently 21 games unbeaten, going 16 unbeaten in the league, as they hunt for promotion back to the Championship.
The Millers sit at the top of League One on 47 points after 22 league games, 2 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Wigan Athletic, who have a game in hand on them.
Rotherham are currently recording their longest unbeaten streak in their history, beating the previous record, which was 16 games, which was set in the 2013/14 season, where they gained promotion to Championship via the Play-offs, beating Leyton Orient at Wembley, after a 2-2 draw saw them win 4-3 on penalties.
Danny from the RUFC podcast said, “This unbeaten run seems to have come at a strange time, because we had a very bad loss to Fleetwood.” This was the last time the Millers had lost a game, losing it 4-2. In their next couple of games, they drew 1-1 with both Lincoln and Crewe.
Danny went onto say, “It didn’t really feel like something special was happening, but then we just started rolling off results.”
Rotherham are now in fine form, beating teams at the top end and bottom end of the table in empathic fashion, getting 5-1 wins against both Sunderland and Gillingham, both at different ends of the table. “The last time we beat two teams scoring five goals in the same season I believe was in the 2017/18 season.” Danny said.
Danny described it to be special being a Rotherham fan this season, saying. “It’s strange to see all the praise on TV, as it’s normally all doom and gloom for us.”
The side Rotherham had last season in their unfortunate relegation from the Championship isn’t too different from the side they’ve got now, as they managed to keep hold of that same core, with Paul Warne, who has managed the side since 2016.
Matt from the RUFC podcast said. “What we have is a skeleton of a team that was very unlucky to get relegated, we were three minutes from safety.” Following their final day relegation battle, where they did fall from the Championship and back down to League One.
The squad being that lower end of the Championship quality is important for the Millers to bounce back straight away, with them being very defensively sound, and in free scoring form at the minute.
Matt said, “Our defence is amazing, we’ve conceded only three goals in 11 away games.” Which is a remarkable stat for a team that hopes to be fighting for promotion, come the end of the season.
